The National Trust looks after special places for ever for everyone - its estate comprises over 1100 properties covering some 250 000 hectares and 700 miles of coastline throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The historic environment includes all traces of human activity in the past and the Trust's small team of archaeologists ensures that the significance of the historic environment is revealed and understood, so that its special qualities are protected, enhanced, enjoyed and understood by present and future generations. We maintain information on our archaeological sites, structures and historic landscapes in the Historic Buildings, Sites and Monuments Record (HBSMR). The HBSMR also feeds into day to day management by underpinning the support and advice which the archaeologists give to the Trust's property managers.
