British Academy Research Grants

Grants are available to support advanced research in all humanities subjects. Awards are intended for the following purposes: travel and maintenance expenses in the United Kingdom or overseas in connexion with an approved programme of research. Travel costs will be considered only when the applicant shows a necessary connexion between the travel and the research programme proposed; for example, a journey to inspect archives or museum holdings; payment for research and secretarial assistance necessary for and directly used for the research project;

Eligibility:

The general criteria set out in the general notes of guidance apply. Applicants should note that grants cannot be made retrospectively, and it is therefore essential that applications are made well in advance of the proposed dates of research in order to ensure that they can be considered by the awarding committee.

Awards are offered for the duration of one year only, although there is no bar to reapplying for further funds relating to the same project at a later stage.

Note. Archaeologists may apply for personal grants (up to £5,000) only for personal travel and maintenance costs for museum, archive and site visits, or for assistance with the preparation of research for publication.

Method of application and closing dates:

Applications should be submitted on the standard Research Grant form, available from university research offices, or from the offices of the Academy at The British Academy, 20-21 Cornwall Terrace, London, NW1 4QP. Tel: 0171 487-5966 Fax: 0171 224-3897 or by email.
