In 1996/97 grants were available for full-time new self-financing ‘home’ students on taught courses who are in financial hardship (defined as essential expenditure exceeding personal income); the situation for 1997/98 is still unknown. Applicants should be graduates of not more than 3 years' standing who must normally have been in receipt of an LEA maintenance award (with priority to students who were in receipt of a maximum award) for their undergraduate degree; or whose sibling is currently in receipt of an LEA maintenance award; or graduates of more than 3 years' standing (on low incomes who will be assessed independently). Awards of up to £1,000 may be made.
