Images of Africa: Stereotypes and Realities

22.x.98 - 24.x.98

Society of Research on African Cultures '98

Montclair State University, New Jersey

The main theme of this conference is the understanding of the misrepresentation of African cultures through the imposition of western ideas of the categorisation of 'self' and 'other' in terms of a hierarchy of superiority and inferiority. It is hoped that through the study of how these thoughts came to influence and construct the definition of Africa as we 'know' it, we can begin to understand African civilisations better, and give them their due place in history. Papers are invited on these topics, abstracts due by July 15th 1998.

For more information, contact Mrs Sally Garson on <garson@saturn.montclair.edu> for details, or send abstracts to Dr. Daniel Mengara on <mengara@chss.montclair.edu>.
