British Academy
Grants
Small Grants up
to £5000 Archaeologists may apply for personal grants
(up to £5000) only for personal travel and maintenance costs for
museum, archive and site visits, or for assistance with the preparation
of research for publication. All other archaeological work is covered
under the separate scheme below. It should be noted that the average
level of grant is considerably lower than £5000. Closing
dates: 30 September, 30 November, 28 February and 30 April. Applicants
will be notified of the outcome approximately three months later. The British Academy, 20-21 Cornwall Terrace, London, NW1 4QP You could also e-mail <basec@britac.ac.uk> or

Archaeological Fieldwork and Post-Excavation
Work Grants are available to
support all archaeological fieldwork, together with related general and
scientific post-excavation work, including the costs of qualified
research assistants. Grants are intended principally for archaeological
excavation and work in the field. Applications are invited from
individuals and organisations based in the United Kingdom and
undertaking academic archaeological research. Grants are not available
for the purpose of undertaking emergency rescue archaeology, or routine
archaeological recording. The Humanities Research Board will typically
consider making grants up to £20,000 but applications for larger
amounts may be considered on their merits. The average sum requested for
new projects in 1995/96 was £5400 and the average level of award
for new projects was £4250. Closing Date: 31 December.
Applicants will be notified of the outcome at the beginning of the
following April. The British Academy, 20-21 Cornwall Terrace,
London, NW1 4QP Tel: 0171 487-5966, Fax: 0171 224-3897 You

Applied
Science in Archaeology Grants from this fund are intended to provide
support for non-site-specific research proposals which involve the
application of established scientific techniques, whether through
provision of services of an identified specialist, or through access to
certain existing Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) supported
facilities. Applications for any kind of science-based archaeology are
eligible, provided that the project is self-contained, using a
reasonably well-established technique or approach, and not
site-specific. Applications whose aim is primarily methodological are
not encouraged. This fund is not intended as an adjunct to site-specific
post-excavation costs, for which funding should be sought under the
Archaeological Fieldwork and Post-Excavation scheme. Applications are
invited from archaeologists, archaeological scientists and
archaeological conservators resident in the United Kingdom Grants are
available up to a limit of £10,000 in any one year. Closing
Date: 31 December. Applicants will be notified of the outcome at the
beginning of the following April. The British Academy, 20-21
Cornwall Terrace, London, NW1 4QP Tel: 0171 487-5966, Fax: 0171

Overseas
Conference Grants Grants
are available to help meet the costs of travel by British scholars to
overseas conferences or similar gatherings abroad. Applications for
assistance with conference fees, maintenance costs or travel insurance
will not be considered. Grants are for British scholars presenting an
academic paper by invitation of the conference organisers. Preference
will be given to younger postdoctoral scholars, and account will be
taken of previous support for conference attendance, with no more than
two awards being made in three years, and no more than one award in a
twelve-month period. Grants will not exceed the cost of the cheapest
Apex-type fare, and will not normally exceed £650. All applications
for a single conference will normally be considered at the same time, in
accordance with the timetable given below; and generally no more than
four awards will be made for a single conference, except in the case of
major disciplinary congresses. Applicants will be notified of the
outcome within three months of the relevant closing date. The
British Academy, 20-21 Cornwall Terrace, London, NW1 4QP Tel:
0171 487-5966, Fax: 0171 224-3897 You could also e-mail <basec@britac.ac.uk> or

British Grants are
available to help meet the costs of overseas scholars contributing major
papers at conferences held in Britain. Grants will normally be made for
travel expenses, but applications for maintenance will also be
considered. Conference fees will not be met. There is no prescribed
maximum sum, but grants rarely exceed £1000. Closing Dates:
30 September, 30 November, 28 February and 30 April. Applicants will be
notified of the outcome approximately three months after the closing
date. Applications should not be submitted more than a year in advance
of the conference. The British Academy, 20-21 Cornwall Terrace,
London, NW1 4QP Tel: 0171 487-5966, Fax: 0171 224-3897 You

Other
Support for Conferences The HRB will also consider requests for
support for conferences, seminars and workshops in the UK which fall
outside the Conference Grant schemes. Examples may include small
seminars or workshops of established specialists in particular areas of
study; or workshops in specialist areas such as the exploitation of
specialist collections in museums, libraries or archives. A request
should be made by letter in the first instance, and well in advance, so
that it can be considered by the Research Committee before the
conference or seminar is due to take place. The British Academy,
20-21 Cornwall Terrace, London, NW1 4QP Tel: 0171 487-5966, Fax:

Publication
Subventions Grants are
available to assist authors to publish scholarly monographs. The
subventions are intended to help defray production costs in cases where
publication would not otherwise be possible. The scheme does not exist
to guarantee a publisher’s profits, nor to reduce the retail price of a
book. Particular emphasis is given to enabling younger scholars to
publish a first monograph. The manuscript must have been completed and
accepted by the publisher (subject to any conditions concerning the
provision of a subvention) before an application is made. Subventions do
not normally exceed 25% (to a maximum of around £2000) of the
direct costs of production, excluding any element of publisher’s
overheads. A detailed breakdown of costs and projected income from sales
is required from the publisher. Closing dates: 30 September, 30
November and 28 February. Applicants will be notified of the outcome
approximately three months later. The British Academy, 20-21
Cornwall Terrace, London, NW1 4QP Tel: 0171 487-5966, Fax: 0171
224-3897 You could also e-mail <basec@britac.ac.uk> or

Support
for Learned Journals Limited funds are available to help learned
journals meet production costs in cases where publication would not
otherwise be possible. Priority is given to helping new journals to
establish themselves, though extraordinary costs arising from a
particular issue may also be met. Few awards exceed £1000. Closing date: 30 November. Applicants will be notified of the
outcome in March. The British Academy, 20-21 Cornwall Terrace,
London, NW1 4QP Tel: 0171 487-5966, Fax: 0171 224-3897 You

Research
Leave Scheme Awards
are available to relieve staff of teaching and administrative
responsibilities in order to bring a research project to publication.
The next awards under this scheme are available to be taken up during
the 1998/99 academic year. The scheme is open to full-time members of
the academic staff of any institution of higher education in the United
Kingdom. A contribution towards the salary costs for the replacement
member of staff will be provided. Closing date: 1 November 1997.
Applicants will be notified of the outcome in late February 1998. The British Academy, 20-21 Cornwall Terrace, London, NW1 4QP Tel: 0171 487-5966, Fax: 0171 224-3897 You could also e-mail

research overseas, through exchange agreements with institutions in the
following countries (the deadlines for applications are shown for each
scheme): The British Academy, 20-21 Cornwall Terrace,

The British Academy is able to bid for
support from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office East/West Cultural
Initiatives Fund for specific projects. Applications should first be
made to the Academy; if approved, the bids will be submitted to the
Foreign & Commonwealth Office. Grants are intended to support joint
symposia or aspects of joint research with Central and Eastern Europe
and the former Soviet Union. Grants may be used to meet the
accommodation, maintenance and travel expenses within Britain of
overseas and British participants. In exceptional circumstances grants
may also be used to meet he expenses of overseas scholars in travelling
to the United Kingdom. Closing date: 30 September; activities
should take place during the following financial year (beginning on 1
April). The British Academy, 20-21 Cornwall Terrace, London, NW1
