Research Grants Scheme

Grants are awarded for the purchase of specialized equipment or essential consumable materials for use in research projects in all areas of science, including scientific aspects of archaeology. 355 grants were offered in 1995, of up to sterling 10,000.

Grants for Attendance at Overseas Conferences

Grants are awarded for visits overseas where conference attendance is the main or sole purpose. The grants cover conferences in all areas of science, including scientific aspects of archaeology. Applicants must be of postdoctoral status or equivalent. Employees of industrial or commercial bodies are not eligible to apply. Value varies according to expenses involved, but not normally covering full economy class fare; may cover a proportion of subsistence and registration expenses.

Closing Dates: 1 March, 1 June, 1 October, 1 December. (Note: separate dates may apply for certain major conferences.)

International Exchanges

Exchange agreements exist with many academies throughout the world and they provide for visits in both directions within agreed quotas.

Rutherford Scholarship

Awarded for the encouragement of young graduates of exceptional promise and ability in all areas of science, including scientific archaeology. Applicants must be graduates of a Commonwealth university and under age 26 on 1 October in the year of application. Not normally open to graduates who have already held a senior research award. Appointments to be held in some part of the Commonwealth other than that in which the candidate graduated. For 3 years but may very occasionally be renewed. May not be held concurrently with other awards or income except with consent of the Society. 2 scholarships offered biennially.

Value: sterling 7400 (reviewed annually); allowance for fees, travel, research expenses, etc. Some adjustment according to individual circumstances.

Closing Date: Normally mid-February.

Leverhulme Trust - Amersham International Senior Research Fellowships

These fellowships enable senior scientists in academe to be relieved of all teaching and administrative duties to do full-time research for up to one year. Applicants must be aged between 35 and 55, be of postdoctoral status or equivalent and hold a substantive post in a British university. Employees of Research Councils, or those in Governmental or other research institutions, are not eligible. The Fellowship will be for between one academic term and one year, normally at the applicant's own institution, but may be held at any higher educational or research institution, or industrial research organization, in the UK, approved by the Council of the Royal Society and the Leverhulme Trust. 7 Leverhulme and 1 Amersham Fellowships are offered a year.

University Research Fellowships

These fellowships provide extended support for young, high-quality research workers to work in university departments, with the expectation of achieving permanent posts (in academe or industry) within 6 years. Outstanding scientists under the age of 40, with between 2 and 7 years of postdoctoral experience. Persons holding substantive posts in universities in the UK will not be considered. 5 years in the first instance (possibly renewable in two instalments up to 10 years). All areas of science are covered, including scientific archaeology. Number Offered: Varies. 57 appointed in 1995. Value: Salaries on the university lecturers' A/B scale for non-clinical academic and related staff with research expenses and special fund allowances.

Study Visits

For up to 3, or exceptionally 6 months. These grants are for scientists of at least postdoctoral status and of proven research ability. The purpose of such a grant is to exchange ideas and information, to carry out research, acquire new techniques and to give lectures. Though no set closing date, applications should be made at least 3 months before the proposed start of the visit.

Royal Society - NATO Fellowships

One year fellowships tenable in a laboratory in the UK from scientists from countries in Eastern Europe / Former Soviet Union who have reached postdoctoral or equivalent status and are under the age of 40. The competiton is open for research in a variety of science based subjects, including archaeology. Fellows are given a grant which covers the cost of living in the UK and a contribution towards airfare, research expenses snd subsidiary visits.

Closing dates: 15th April, 15th September.
