Access Scheme

In 1996/97 grants were available for full-time new self-financing 'home' students on taught courses who are in financial hardship (defined as essential expenditure exceeding personal income); the situation for 1997/98 is still unknown. Applicants should be graduates of not more than 3 years' standing who must normally have been in receipt of an LEA maintenance award (with priority to students who were in receipt of a maximum award) for their undergraduate degree; or whose sibling is currently in receipt of an LEA maintenance award; or graduates of more than 3 years' standing (on low incomes who will be assessed independently). Awards of up to sterling 1000 may be made.

Fee Bursaries for part-time Graduate Students

100 Bursaries for students registered on a part-time degrees in research or graduate taught courses. Award will cover fees only, and candidates will be required to satisfy certain financial criteria and to demonstrate why they are unable to meet the fees from their own resources.

Closing date: funds are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

Tindall Scholarship

One award to a graduate of any university for research in any department. The scholarship provides maintenance (sterling 5295 in 97/98) and tuition fees for three years.

Hossein Farming Scholarships

Nine awards to good honours graduates of any institution who are natives of England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. Preference is given to research related to mining and related subjects. The scholarships provide maintenance (sterling 5295 in 97/98) and tuition fees for three years.

Humanities and Social Sciences Divisional Research Scholarships -- Scheme A

Five University scholarships open to Home, EU and Oveseas candidates and will cover maintenance (sterling 5295 in 1997/98) and a Research Training Support Grant of sterling 500 for up to three years.

International University Scholarships for Overseas Students

A scholarship to be offset against fees and varying in value according to subject area. It will be paid over a three-year period to a full-time research student classed as 'overseas' for tuition fee purposes and not in receipt of support from a recognised funding agency. Awards are made on the basis of academic merit.

Foreign Travel Fund

Provides grants of up to sterling 750 for overseas travel to support teaching or research, normally for attendance at meetings and conferences and for visits to academic institutions in the vicinity of a conference venue. Full-time academic staff only can apply; awards to other categories of staff will be made at the discretion of the Chairman of the Research Committee. Applicants will normally be expected to show that they have made efforts to obtain external support prior to making an application to the fund.

Learned Societies Fund

An allowance towards expenses in attending meetings of learned societies within the UK to give oral account of original work of which the member of staff is the author or joint author. One visit each year to hear original contributions to learning at a meeting of a learned society held elsewhere in the UK. To attend a meeting in the UK as an officer or member of the council of a learned society. Academic staff and registered postgraduate students who are not able to obtain support from their sponsors may apply.

University Research Fund

The fund is administered by the University's Research Committee and awards internal grants with a view to increasing the University's research standing and its potential to attract further funding from external bodies. Awards are made in respect of two activities: research projects with discernible objectives and planning requiring equipment, consumables, and/or staffing/students; and consumable requests for the support of visiting researchers from overseas. Applications are welcomed from all categories of research staff. Grants are usually tenable for one year and should range from sterling 1000 to 20,000.

Joint Scholarships with Sheffield Hallam University

20 scholarships providing fee and maintenance for up to three years will be awarded for research purposes which are jointly supervised with Sheffield Hallam University.

Petrie Watson Exhibitions

Undergraduate and graduate students currently registered either full-time or part-time in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Sheffield are invited to apply for the Exhibitions which are intended to provide an opportunity for carrying out an approved programme of study and travel either in this country or abroad. Exhibitions are also available for students wishing to attend approved vacation courses, summer schools or conferences.

Exhibitions cannot be used to cover the costs of required course work nor to fund basic research work forseeable at initial registration.

Awards will normally be in the region of sterling 250 - 750.

Closing date: 21st February.

Overseas Research Studentships Scheme

The Overseas Research Studentships scheme is operated by the University. These funds pay for the difference between the 'home' tuition fees and the full cost for overseas students.
