---CALLS FOR PAPERS---

European Association of Archaeologists Conference: sessions confirmed for Lisbon, September 12-17 2000

DIGGING IN THE DIRT 2 (LECTURES) and 3 (ROUND TABLE)

Session Abstract:

Members of the EAA should already be aware that there are major differences in the way archaeologists excavate in different countries. This stands in stark contrast to such "hard" sciences as biology, chemistry or physics. Is this a problem?

In this session we examine the dirty business of excavation. We can look back at how we have excavated in the past, and discuss methodologies for the future. We can see how archaeologists excavate their sites in different countries, and learn from one another.

Session organiser: Geoff Carver gcarver@t-online.de

Poster symposium: Cultural Resource Management and Archaeometry: Entering the Mainstream

2001 SAA Conference in New Orleans.

The goal of this symposium is to demonstrate that archaeometric techniques have a significant place in contract archaeology and provide a cost-effective means of doing research-oriented archaeology in a CRM framework. We are placing no limitation on the techniques employed-showcasing a diversity of techniques is foremost-but we would prefer that posters reflect cases where archaeometry provides a significant contribution to the CRM project, perhaps on an ongoing basis.

If you have any questions, etc., or if you anticipate conducting a suitable project in the next year, please email us:

Theoretical Archaeology Group, December 2000, Oxford, England

Session Abstract: Science in Archaeological Theory

With the rise of post processual archaeology and the abandonment of processual frameworks, the last 20 years have witnessed an increasing fragmentation between theoretical archaeology and archaeological science. The aim of the session is not to re-enact old science vs. non-science debates, but rather to move forward from this schism to improve the discipline by getting both sides talking to each other again. We encourage papers that provide insightful cautions and illustrate significant differences between scientific and interpretive archaeologies.

Please email submissions for conference presentations to Craig Bardsley, c.s.bardsley@reading.ac.uk or Jennifer Hiller (PRP99JCH@sheffield.ac.uk
