Excavation on the site of Stafford mill, immediately to the south of the medieval town and close to the river Sow, was undertaken by Birmingham Archaeology for Jackson Civil Engineering and the Environment Agency. The excavation recorded the well-preserved remains of a timber-framed structure comprising at least five phases, of which phases 1 and 4 were dated by dendrochronology to the late 12th and mid-16th century respectively.
