Introduction

Hawkesley Farm Moat, Longbridge, Birmingham: Archaeological Watching Brief

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken at Hawkesley Farm Moat (SMR 02014 SAM 22), Munslow Grove, Longbridge, Birmingham (NGR SP 017 776) in March 2004. The work was commissioned by Birmingham City Council, and was carried out by Birmingham Archaeology. The watching brief was carried out during the removal and replacement of a retaining wall and the demolition of a ramp, both of which were cut into the northern bank of the northern arm of the moat. Groundworks revealed a section across the bank that clearly showed the layers that it was composed of. No evidence for any internal revetment was noted, the bank had simply been constructed using upcast from the excavation of the moat. No finds were recovered.
