Higgins, D. (2007) Tobacco Pipe Making in Birmingham: The Documentary Evidence, 1762-1936. Research report submitted as part of PN1611 Birmingham Archaeology. A review of the documentary evidence relating to tobacco pipe making in Birmingham has been carried out in order to provide a framework for considering the artefactual evidence. The most recent list of Birmingham pipemakers contains some 227 named individuals or companies, with dates ranging from 1762-1936. There are six late-eighteenth century pipemakers recorded between 1762 and 1793, showing that the trade was already well established in the town by this date. PDF 212 Kb
