As part of a doctoral investigation of soil formation in the Wolds a 3 x 12m trench was excavated across the lower slope of the valley mouth of Whaydale. The transect showed a silty clay loam lying above solifluction gravels at a depth of 80-140cm. In the central part of the valley mouth the clay loam continued to a depth greater than the extent of the auger (1.5m). However, very little artefactual material was found in this area, confirming that Anglian activity did not continue to the valley edge.
