An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology during groundworks associated with the construction of 24 houses, a block of six flats, access roads and landscaping at Land at Freemantle Common Road Southampton Hampshire.
No features or deposits of archaeological significance were observed during the groundwork programme, and no finds material pre-dating the modern period was recovered. This was due to the severe impact of post-medieval/modern development of the site. Sydney House was located on the west end of the site from 1876. During the Second World War the site was hit by two bombs and post war aerial photography shows that Sydney House was no longer standing after the war. The structural remains 103 identified at the west end of Trench 1 and the basement 502, Trench 5, may possibly have been associated with Sydney House.
