In February 2017, an archaeological evaluation, comprising the excavation of sixteen 30m trial trenches, was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology on agricultural land located to the west of Heckford's Road, Great Bentley, Colchester, Essex.
The evaluation found a low concentration of ditches and pits spread across the site with a possible trackway identified in previous works to the west also picked up in the south-west of the site.
A series of ditches found across the site at right angles to the trackway may represent the remnant of a prehistoric field system arranged around the trackway while the remaining features, including a possible ring ditch suggest at least a second phase of activity in the vicinity.
