Pillbox 5 (Steval Point). Observation post of 1898-1906 converted into a pillbox. Made of concrete blocks. Earlier viewing aperture filled in with concrete blocks to create embrasure. Concrete approach passage and flat concrete roof re-used in unaltered form from earlier observation post. A pinnacle seen on the roof today allowed the ventilation duct to pass through the roof's original turf cover.

This non-standard pillbox has a small concrete cone rising from its back. This is approx. 0.5m high with a base diameter of c.0.2m and a top diameter of c.0.8m. It has the remains of a metal pin in the centre. [The recorder considers this may have been a radio aerial base or something connected with the adjacent IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) towers.
