Introduction

Excavation and Building Recording at Cricklepit Mill, Exeter 1989 (Exeter archive site 98)

Outline drawings were made of the Cricklepit Mill standing buildings in 1989 prior to the demolition of Lower Mills. The leat channels and derelict mill wheel were also partially recorded at this period.

Excavations showed that deposits around 2 metres in overall depth occur in the Lower Mills area, overlying course river gravels. In places these deposits exceed 2 metres in depth, particularly where water channels have scoured into the underlying gravels.
