Introduction

Pre-excavation site shot from East

A planning application has been submitted for the demolition of the existing war memorial hospital and associated buildings owing to the construction of an integrated health and social care facility, Haltwhistle War Memorial Hospital, Westgate, Haltwhistle, Northumberland utilises Greencroft House, a building of uncertain date which was remodelled at the start of the 19th century and subsequently converted into a hospital in the 1920s. The building was subsequently extended and further adapted with the most notable extension comprising the maternity wing constructed in 1939. The stable block to the rear of the property is contemporary with the original domestic building. A programme of building recording has carried out to English Heritage standards, following the guidelines issued by that body in 2006.
