Photogrammetric survey

Introduction

In 2007 the Trustees of Glastonbury Abbey commissioned a new measured survey of the standing remains of the abbey church. The work was undertaken by Downland of Devizes, Wiltshire, and carried out in stages during 2008-10. The survey is the only accurate record of the structure. It shows each stone of the surviving medieval facework of the monument. The masonry which was visible when the church was intact consists of ashlar blocks (mostly from the quarries at Doulting and Dundry, Somerset); the areas concealed from view (such as the wall surfaces within the roof space) are usually rough coursed rubble. In these records the medieval core shown in outline; much of it is now covered by a cap of 20th-century stonework.
