Digital Object Identifiers

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are persistent identifiers which can be used to consistently and accurately reference digital objects and/or content. The DOIs provide a way for the ADS resources to be cited in a similar fashion to traditional scholarly materials. More information on DOIs at the ADS can be found on our help page.

Overview

Glastonbury Abbey: Archaeology, Legend and Public Engagement

The digital archive contains the main elements of 3D modelling developed during the project. This includes the following buildings:

  • the Abbot's complex, c.1500s
  • the Anglo-Saxon churches (3 phases), c.700 - c.1100
  • the Anglo-Saxon glass furnaces, c.700
  • the Lady Chapel (interior, exterior and undercroft), c.1250s (interior/exterior) and c.1500s (undercroft)
  • the medieval cloister (plus surviving fragments), c.1150s
  • the 'old church' or Vetusta Ecclesia, c.500-800

Each building has been supplied as an OBJ wireframe, compatible with many common 3D visualisation platforms. Due to the proprietary nature of many of the textures used within the models for output, textures have not been supplied.

The modelling was undertaken for public dissemination purposes rather than conservation or preservation record. Due to the ruinous nature of the site, much of the modelling was informed by excavation record, supported by comparanda and informed conjecture through detailed documentary research. Whilst retaining a good level of accuracy, the models should not therefore be used as preservation record or as the basis for spatially-accurate study.
