Introduction

Figure 42: Primary Type P3 at St Briavel’s Common, Gloucestershire (SO5376803118)

This archive contains the results of two historic landscape characterisation (HLC) projects. The first of these, undertaken between 1997 and 1999, covered the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty within the counties of Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire, Wiltshire, and Worcestershire. The second, undertaken between 2000 and 2002, covered the remainder of the county of Gloucestershire together with the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the counties of Herefordshire and Monmouthshire.

The objective of both projects was to characterise the present landscape in terms of the visible evidence of the human processes which have formed it through time in order to inform a wide range of planning, conservation and management-led initiatives and strategies.
