This report presents the results of the geophysical survey undertaken at Wrotham Park, near Potter’s Bar, Hertfordshire, in August and September 2018. It specifies the survey methodology together with an interpretation discussion of the survey results. Magnetometry, ground penetrating radar and earth resistance were carried out across the area of a supposed moated site at the northern end of a field close to the Wrotham Park estate offices. In addition magnetometry was completed across the whole of the field, and a second area of archaeological potential was targeted using ground penetrating radar. Results of the magnetometry indicated a substantial quantity of ferrous noise in the data, with a series of linear positive anomalies marking geological formations caused by past glacial activity. In addition a series of linear anomalies indicated possible archaeological remains, principally along the supposed line of the Gannick Bank. The ground penetrating radar indicated sparse remains associated with the possible chantry chapel within the moated area, with the moat of the site being picked out in the lower part of the radar slices. The earth resistance survey indicated the presence of part of a possible building and associated possible pathways and garden features. A possible building that might be associated with the chantry chapel was found in the results of the survey, although the modern extent of the pond at the site seems to have obliterated part of the structure. Additional associated anomalies were found adjacent to the remains of the building. The possible line of the Gannick Bank was located, together with associated linear anomalies perhaps indicating further structures.

This report presents the results of a geophysical survey undertaken at the site of Clausentum, Bitterne Park Manor in Southampton, in May 2003. The work was carried out in part to evaluate the location and extent of the Roman settlement on the site, and as a trial of integrated geophysical survey strategy in an urban context. It also provided the opportunity to train a number of students from the Department of Geophysical Sciences of the University of Southampton. The report specifies the geophysical survey methodology together with the archaeological interpretation and discussion of the results. The survey at Clausentum was successful in locating a number of discrete archaeological features associated with the Roman fort and settlement.

This study has been produced by the Department of Archaeology, University of Southampton to assess the archaeological potential of the site of a Roman Villa to the north of the village of Itchen Abbas in Hampshire. This report has been produced in the context of a proposed, collaborative research project between staff and postgraduate research students at the Department of Archaeology the University of Southampton and staff based at English Heritage.

Northington Grange in Hampshire is an English Heritage owned historic building surrounded by arable farmland. Little is known however about the archaeological remains surrounding it and there is some question of the location of a preceding 16th century manor house. This survey was initiated in order to discover the layout of the formal gardens which were supposed to have accompanied the house and to investigate the possibility of an earlier house existing in the vicinity of the current building.

This report presents the results of the geophysical survey undertaken at Old Sarum, near Salisbury in Wiltshire, between 30th March and 11th April 2014. It specifies the survey methodology together with an interpretation discussion of the survey results. The survey was carried out across the inner and outer bailey of the scheduled monument, incorporating topographic survey, magnetometer, earth resistance survey, GPR and ERT surveys. The preliminary results demonstrate an incredible number of features within the area of the outer bailey, showing the plan of the medieval city, and potentially earlier structures. The trial GPR in the inner bailey also demonstrated the presence of substantial medieval structures, together with possible remains predating the inner bailey. To date the results represent the first phase of a field project spanning three years, however, the potential for the application of these different techniques has been established at the site, and more intensive program of survey will hopefully allow the team to map the site and its environs.

This report presents the results of the geophysical survey undertaken at Old Sarum, near Salisbury in Wiltshire, between March 2016 and July 2017. It specifies the survey methodology together with an interpretation and discussion of the survey results. The survey was conducted over parts of Old Sarum, the eastern suburbs, and a number of fields between Old Sarum and the River Avon, including Dean's Park Field. The results indicate a number of archaeological features, including roads and structures associated with the eastern suburb of Old Sarum, and multiple phases of activity in a potential western suburb along Phillip's Lane to the west of the monument.

It has been clearly argued by Greene (1992) and demonstrated particularly by Coppack at Thornholme Priory in Lincolnshire (Coppack 1989, 1990) that the surveying of precincts is essential in order to define the extent of monastic sites and the level of ancillary and peripheral activities. The Department of Archaeology at the University of Southampton, through its research project on medieval settlement in the Isle of Wight, included Quarr Abbey in its research remit and in August 1997 a programme of topographic and geophysical survey was undertaken to investigate the cropmarks and define any relationship to the assumed line of the precinct wall at this location.
