Series: Archaeology Cambridgeshire East unpublished report series

On 14 January 2018, Archaeology Cambridgeshire East undertook an archaeological survey by field walking on part of a 4ha field situated between the Soham By Pass and Moor Farm, Soham. Aerial photographs showed that a henge monument may be located in part of the field. The finds included several pieces of worked flint and a small amount of mixed and relatively recent pottery sherds. The majority of flint flakes found were due to mechanical ploughing but several significant pieces will be added to the Soham Museum collection.

Land immediately west of Bedwell Hey Farm, Little Thetford was subject to investigation by Archaeology Cambridgeshire East during 2018. The land owner had reported pottery of the Roman period being found on the site for many years. Following studying of LiDAR and aerial photography for the site, a geophysical survey using Resistivity, Magnetometry and Vertical Electrical Sounding was carried out. The results were combined with evidence from surface finds noted during the survey.

An archaeological survey by field-walking on part of a 2.74 ha site north of Reach Road Burwell, Cambridgeshire recovered a large number of finds covering a wide range of periods. The finds included pottery, flint, bone and other material.

In February 2016 members of Archaeology Cambridgeshire East (ACE) dug two test pits on land adjacent to 71 Mill Corner, formerly part of Soham's Waterside industrial area, as a training exercise. The area is close to the west of the Saxon ecclesiastical enclosure on what was previously part of the mere bank common and is bordered by a ditch that was once part of a dock accessible from Soham Mere - but now much reduced in size - and forms part of the local land drainage network. No 71 Mill Corner was a railway workers cottage during World War II. To the north west of the site is the location of the former Soham Railway Station, closed by Beeching in the 1970's. The old Victorian Station was destroyed in an explosion when an ammunition train blew up in Soham Station in June 1944. This event is well documented. It was expected that demolition rubble and detritus from the explosion period would form a significant layer and this was born out in the excavation. Despite good weather the dig was curtailed by the presence of ground water before early historic layers were accessed.
