88-89 East Street, Sudbury, Suffolk. CO10 2TP. Heritage Statement for the house and former shoe shop. 26 10 2016. Within the scope of a Heritage Statement it can be stated that the red brick house with its cellars was the original building dating to circa 1800. It was quite modest with two rooms either side of a central hallway. It is likely that the Cellar, which could be accessed from the yard, was also used as the Kitchen as it is unusual to find a fireplace in a cellar in a modest house. The building was enlarged in the MC19th (before the 1880 Ordnance Survey) with a two storey rear extension on a lower level providing a kitchen and another upper room, possibly a bathroom. The Stable range was a separate building and the blackened interiors that remain indicate strongly it was the Smithy noted on the OS map. The row of tethering rings in the western wall reinforces this idea. The upper rooms may have been habitable before they were converted in the MC20th to an additional bedroom and en-suite for the house. Half of the range was demolished between 1972 and 1976. The extension of the house into the Stable was most likely done in the 1950’s after the rest of the terrace had been demolished to make space for Cavendish Way. However most of the decor that remains is of the Art Deco period before WW2 and is typified by the four panel doors, home-made construction and the Bakelite fittings. Half of the house was used as a shop selling Dr Marten’s shoes in the LC20th and EC21st and the rest ceased to be used for accommodation. As a result the house fell into disrepair and neglect and was purchased in a parlous state in 2010, a period of economic recession. The house is in a parlous state with large holes in the roof, floors and ceilings. The floor of the Stable is rotted and unsafe, beyond economic repair. Of its original decor only a single Adams style fire surround remains.

Description and analysis of the House, Barn and Stables. 07 05 2015. Upshire Hall is a Listed Building and a landmark that has been all but subsumed by the motorway and the industrial park. Much of its charm lies in its C18th southern elevation and the gardens. The rear of the building is cluttered and unattractive. Internally the building has good Victorian decor and features fireplaces and an attractive EC20th staircase. The upper rooms have Art Deco features and furniture. Historically, it is noted for the Prince Regent visiting and engraving a piece of window glass in 1814 in dedication to Rose.. The original Barn frame is a typical design of the Napoleonic War Era which ignited the rush for farms to convert to grain production to capitalise on the grain embargo imposed during the hostilities from AD1799 to AD1815. There is a tendency to think that barns were large, open buildings without internal divisions or floors but this is purely down to all the divisions being removed in the C20th to install modern machinery, in particular seed dressers and grain dryers. At Upshire Hall it appears that the Barn was used as a granary until the C20th but it was also outfitted with accommodation for a stable hand to care for the horses in the LC19th. In the LC20th the site became a popular livery and new stables were added. Everything was done on the cheap in the Barn and Stable including using recycled materials for nearly all the interventions. Upshire Hall is a Listed Building and a landmark that has been all but subsumed by the motorway and the industrial park. Much of its charm lies in its C18th southern elevation and the gardens. The rear of the building is cluttered and unattractive. The Barn and Stables are good quality C19th buildings retaining much of their character. The Modern Stables and Kennels are what they are and have no historic value.
