Series: Scarborough Archaeological and Historical Society unpublished report series

The Society is a voluntary organisation founded in 1947 and very active in the Scarborough region. Initially we worked widely over North East Yorkshire including the initial discovery what became known as Star Carr. Between 1987 and 2013 we concentrated on urban excavations in the medieval area of Scarborough. For these we won the Pitt Rivers Award, for the best project carried out in the UK by a voluntary body in 1990 and were runners-up for the award again in 2000.

In the 1990s we developed an interest in the Alum industry of north-east Yorkshire and in 1995 we won a further national award from the Association for Industrial Archaeology for our project at Saltwick Alum Works.

Our current projects are an extensive archaeological survey of Raincliffe Woods/Forge Valley and Brompton Castle hill and the wider landscape setting of Brompton village.

We have our own resistivity meter, magnetometer and total station as well as a Trimble Juno GPS for rapid surveys. There is a wide range of expertise within the society – archaeological, geological and architectural.

We publish our research through our Transactions; our Research Report Series; and our Interim Reports and also through the Field Work summaries on our web site
