Report on archaeological Building Recording

The Archaeology Unit of Southampton City Council carried out an archaeological building survey of Pond Cottage, Lower Sandy Down Lane, Boldre, Lymington, SO41 8PP in response to a condition on Planning Application 12/97342. The cottage is listed Grade II. The cottage was built-in the mid-19th century in a distinctive Sussex bond brick pattern and consisted of a two-up two-down main block with an outshot behind, all under a slate roof. The main block had a kitchen and parlour downstairs with two bedrooms above; the outshot contained a scullery and larder at ground floor level with a store room and third bedroom under the roof. Nearby stood a brick-built earth-closet, also in Sussex bond and undoubtedly of the same date. The building had undergone little alteration since it was built, and was a well-preserved example of a 19th century New Forest smallholder's dwelling. Historic documents suggest the plot on which the cottage stands was part of the estate of Thomas Salter, described as a yeoman at his death in 1837, and the Salters owned land in the vicinity in the 18th century. Early 19th century maps show a building in a different place on the plot, but the present building is shown on the 1868 map. In 1851 Ann Salter inherited the plot and the census of that year records her in residence together with her son Thomas and his wife Sarah Ann, and it may be that Ann Salter had the cottage built.

Report on archaeological evaluation

The Archaeology Unit of Southampton City Council carried out an archaeological evaluation excavation on land to the east of St Andrew's Church, Kilmeston, Hampshire, in May, 2014. The work was commissioned by the Parochial Church Council of St Andrews. The Council hopes to extend the churchyard to the east of the present one. Winchester City Council asked for an evaluation of the site with two trenches placed across linear anomalies identified by a geophysics survey. The natural consisted of Clay-with-Flints over Chalk. No prehistoric contexts were identified but a few residual prehistoric artefacts, including later prehistoric pottery sherds and flints, were present. Two features relating to iron-working probably belonged in the Late Saxon-Anglo-Norman period. They contained evidence of iron smithing. The presence of large struck flint flakes suggests an association with the construction of the nearby church which was built of knapped flint nodules with malmstone dressings

Report on archaeological watching brief

MITIE Property Services carried out construction works on 29-33 Market Street, Poole, a listed building dating back to the 17th century. Part of the works was to underpin a boundary wall and this was subject to an archaeological watching brief under a planning condition. The underpinning method was changed to piling rather than excavation so the watching brief was not carried out, but the clearance of a previously unknown cellar revealed historic timbers and the local planning authority requested that these were archaeologically recorded

An archaeological watching brief was carried out on land to the rear of Roxtons (formerly Viva) in High Street, Stockbridge, Hampshire SO20 6HF. The aims of the investigation were principally to investigate the presence or absence of human use of the area, and the date, type, state of preservation, and extent of that use; to recover associated objects; and to record such evidence as did survive. In addition, the nature, dimensions, and relationship of natural deposits were to be noted and recorded. Excavation of trenches some 800mm deep revealed 400mm of modern deposits over 400mm of undated soil. Soil investigation work showed that peat lay 1.4m below the surface, but it was not exposed in the groundworks.

The Archaeology Unit of Southampton City Council carried out an archaeological watching brief at the site of a proposed redevelopment at Poplar Bungalow, Cart Lane, Chilbolton, Hampshire on behalf of Sargeant Developments Ltd. The aims of the investigation as defined in the written scheme of investigation were 'to determine the presence or absence of archaeological features, structures, deposits, artefacts or ecofacts within the area of the site, and to record such evidence' (SCCAU 2012). The natural was alluvium comprising silty clays with flint and chalk. A layer of cultivated soil above the natural pointed to a long history of cultivation marked by burnt flints, a worked flint flake, a fragment of 13th-14th century pottery, and 19th/20th century pottery, china, clay pipe and brick.
