A major landscaping and gardening project by York Museums Trust (YMT) intends to reclaim unused land between the York Art Gallery and Kings' Manor area and develop the North-West corner of the precinct of St. Mary's Abbey as part of a wider scheme of landscaping developments within the environs of the Museum Gardens, York. In advance of these developments, investigations to establish the nature and condition of deposits immediately below the ground surface of St. Mary's Abbey were required. An archaeological watching brief, undertaken by York Museums Trust between 30/03/2015 and 31/03/2015, recorded the three trenches excavated as part of this scheme of works.

A major landscaping and gardening project by York Museums Trust (YMT) intends to reclaim unused land between the York Art Gallery and Kings' Manor area and develop the North-West corner of the precinct of St. Mary's Abbey as part of a wider scheme of landscaping developments within the environs of the Museum Gardens, York. The final phase of developments programmed for the installation of a shallow ramp between two areas of hard paths, across the width of the Abbey Church. In advance of these developments, investigations to establish the nature and condition of deposits immediately below the ground surface of St. Mary's Abbey were required. An archaeological watching brief, undertaken by York Museums Trust between 10th and 13th November 2015, recorded the trench excavated as part of this scheme of works.

A major landscaping and gardening project by York Museums Trust (YMT) intends to reclaim unused land between the York Art Gallery and Kings' Manor area and develop the North-West corner of the precinct of St. Mary's Abbey as part of a wider scheme of landscaping developments within the environs of the Museum Gardens, York. In advance of the installation of a fibre optic cable across the line of the site, investigations to establish the nature and condition of deposits immediately below the ground surface of St. Mary's Abbey were required. An archaeological watching brief, undertaken by York Museums Trust from 30th-31st March 2015, recorded the three trenches excavated as part of this scheme of works. Ground penetrating works undertaken after the evaluation trenches encountered further in situ archaeological remains, recorded here. An excavation was carried out from 10th-15th April 2015 by York Museums Trust staff to investigate the nature of the remains.

Report on an Archaeological Watching Brief: York Art Gallery, Bore Holes

A redevelopment of the York Art Gallery by York Museums Trust (YMT) intends to redevelop the internal structure of the building and reclaim unused land behind the Art Gallery. In advance of these developments, investigations to establish the nature and condition of geological deposits directly beneath the building necessitated the drilling of three bore hole pits in the area surrounding the Art Gallery. An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by York Museums Trust between 29/06/2013 and 04/07/2013 to record these investigations.

An archaeological watching brief undertaken by York Museums Trust on 30/09/2014 recorded the two trenches excavated as part of this scheme of works.

In advance of these developments, investigations to establish the nature and condition of deposits immediately below a bowling green on the site were required. An archaeological watching brief undertaken by York Museums Trust on 07/01/2015 recorded the two trenches excavated as part of this scheme of works.
