Abstract: |
Birmingham Archaeology was commissioned by Birchover Properties (through Faithful and Gould Consultants) to undertake an archaeological evaluation of land at King Street, Derby. The evaluation followed an archaeological desk-based assessment, which also included other, adjoining areas, and an archaeological evaluation of the eastern end of the site conducted in 2003. The assessment identified the bounds of the adjoining church of St Alkmund, its associated graveyard, and highlighted the potential of the proposed development area to contain evidence of features associated with the medieval Bridge Gate frontage, and associated back-plot activity to the rear, although it was suspected that some areas may have been recently reduced in level. The later development of the area, including brick-built terraces of 18-19th century date was also described. The area evaluated latterly included car showroom premises, now demolished. The archaeological evaluation undertaken during late 2003 within the extreme eastern part of the area identified two undated post-holes, together with extensive evidence of levelling-up of the ground surface, and several brick-built structures. The archaeological evaluation undertaken within the central zone of the site in 2004 confirmed that the area had been subjected to extreme truncation by modern activity and as a consequence no archaeological features or deposits were identified as surviving, and no finds were collected. |
