Abstract:
In 2004, All Saints Church Parochial Church Council and Vicar were granted full planning permission (Application No. 04/01973/FUL) by Newark and Sherwood District Council to erect two houses on the site of the former Church Hall, Church Street, Sutton-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire (NGR SK 4801 6600). The Church Hall development site covers an area of approximately 190 square metres. The proposed development site was considered to have a medium to high potential for archaeological remains and/or human burials, due to its close proximity to All Saints Church, which has Anglo-Saxon origins. A condition attached to the planning permission (no. 06) required a scheme for an archaeological watching brief to be submitted to and approved by the Local Planning Authority. In May 2007, CgMs Consulting (Newark) were commissioned by Mr J. Walton to prepare the required Written Scheme of Investigation and to conduct the archaeological watching brief on the site. The intensive watching brief was conducted during intrusive groundworks in July 2007, in accordance with the scheme submitted and approved in June 2007 (8526/07/01). No archaeological features or artefacts were encountered on the site during the intensive watching brief.
