Abstract:
An archaeological excavation was undertaken in May 2007 prior to the development of a site at Henderson Street, Leith, for residential development. A previous evaluation had indicated that there was the potential for the survival of medieval deposits in the southwest corner of the site and later cellaring and structural activity over the remainder. The earliest archaeological remains identified during the project were those of partially surviving relic soil horizons in the southwest corner of the site. These appeared to have developed as part of the stabilisation of dune sands over which much of Leith developed. Pottery from the 14th century was recovered from these deposits. The earliest cut feature identified on the site was interpreted, from physical and environmental evidence, as a domestic bread oven of probable late-medieval or early post medieval date. The southeastern and northwestern portions of the area were dominated by 18th and 19th century structural remains, including a large stone cellar fronting onto Henderson Street, whilst the northeastern portion remained relatively undisturbed. These results indicate that the site was almost certainly beyond the southernmost boundaries of the medieval settlement and was, rather, part of the post-medieval expansion of the area.
