Abstract:
A magnetometer survey was commissioned by AEE Renewables plc on land at Roves Farm, Sevenhampton, near Swindon. The site has been outlined for the proposed development of an array of photovoltaic solar panels. A previous geophysical survey was targeted on a sub-rectangular enclosure which was excluded from the development zone. The original sub-rectangular enclosure is further enclosed by boundary ditches on its eastern, western and northern sides, with double ditches forming trackways extending to the north east and north west. Immediately to the east of the original enclosure are several positive linear, rectilinear, curvilinear and discrete anomalies representing ditches and pits with archaeological potential. To the north of the trackway feature are further linear and rectilinear anomalies that are likely to extend northwards beyond the limits of the survey area. There is evidence for at least a further seven ring ditch features within the proposed development zone. All of these have associated internal and external ditches and pits suggesting settlement. In the northern part of the site four ring ditches appear to be associated with at least two sub-rectangular enclosures containing internal and external pits. The widespread location of the geophysical anomalies form a landscape of land divisions, trackways and settlement features likely to date to both the prehistoric and Roman periods. Many of the anomalies are weak and fragmented suggesting agricultural destruction through arable cultivation. The features relating to the anomalies are likely to be shallow and vulnerable to further disturbance.
