Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was maintained on the removal of a medieval cross from a private driveway to a new site in Dinnington town centre. The cross has two sections, a large chamfered limestone block base, 0.70m across and 0.60m high. Set into the upper surface is a 0.25m wide limestone shaft, surviving to a height of 1.67m from the base. The whole arrangement is therefore 2.27m high. The shaft is square-sectioned, and is plane save for the angled chamfers at its leading edges. The shaft is set diagonally into the base, and the join is sealed with lead. This may relate to an earlier re-location of the cross. The original location of the cross is unknown, and it is unclear if it was a wayside cross or a preaching cross. It has been moved to a more central location in the town. An interpretation panel was also designed to set the cross into its historical context.
