Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in advance of the restoration of the park and gardens at Bantock Park. Excavation and survey proved useful in recovering lost detail of the site not shown in archive documents. Excavations on the site of the greenhouses showed that they seem to have supplanted farm buildings, and the development of the area for greenhousing seemed to have occurred in a number of phases. After the greenhouses were demolished in 1956 a large compost bin with associated hardstanding was laid out. Excavations in the Dutch garden showed much of the Edwardian layout seemingly surviving beneath a later design, it was believed that an accurate restoration would be possible. The survey of the Rockery showed that a greater part of the structure remained in situ. In the Woodland Garden, resistivity helped locate the position of a pond shown on early OS maps but filled in after 1938. [Au(abr)]
