Abstract: |
The excavation was carried out after a previous evaluation had revealed a chalk-lined medieval structure. This was interpreted as a cesspit associated with Reading Abbey. The earliest fills dated from the 12th-13th centuries, but it was no longer in use by the early post-medieval period. The fill sugessts that the structure as backfilled around the time of the Dissolution of the monasteries, after AD1539. |
