Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief did not reveal any significant remains. The watching brief covered two separate areas; one was the c. 190m excavation of pipe trench in the local authority park and the other was topsoil stripping in a nearby area of open land (the compound). The trench works within Kelsey Park exposed a consistent sequence of topsoil and subsoil over weathered natural truncated by 20th century activity to the east. The natural was light brown sand/silt that became clayey with depth, identified by the British Geological Survey as part of the Harwich Formation. Reworked soil horizons across the site produced occasional fragments of ceramic building material and modern pottery, plus one sherd of probable pre-1700 whiteware. Metal detecting during the topsoil strip recovered some artefacts, the earliest a musket ball and a possible George I halfpenny. Historically it is likely that both areas of investigation were open land, perhaps only utilised for pasture or meadow. The heights of natural shown below refer to those in Kelsey Park in the other area of investigation (the compound) the height of natural was at c. 50.0m OD.
