Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was carried out by Geoff Potter of Compass Archaeology. Groundworks for two new pipelines in the western part of the park, including the initial topsoil strip of a corridor c. 6m wide along the line of the proposed pipe trenches, was monitored. No archaeological finds or features were observed. There was a simple and more or less consistent stratigraphic sequence across the site of topsoil and subsoil (c. 400mm) over undisturbed natural. The upper soil horizons produced occasional 19th/20th century ceramics (CBM, pot, clay pipe). In the northeastern corner of the site, adjacent to Danson Lane, there was an overlying layer of recent made ground. The underlying natural was generally a firm orange/light brown sandy silt (Blackheath Beds according to the Geological Survey Sheet 271). At a depth of 0.8m below ground surface this frequently became much sandier and at a lower level (c. 1.4m) more gravelly. |
