Abstract:		 An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken to inform the proposed development of a supermarket and car park in Neston town centre. A study area of 1km radius around the proposed development site was examined. There were no recorded cultural heritage sites within the proposed development site boundary. Historic mapping demonstrated that the area was partially developed in the late post-medieval period. The medieval core of the town has been designated as an Area of Archaeological Potential. This area partially encompasses the proposed development site. The proposed development may impact directly upon previously unrecorded archaeological remains within the site boundary. The proposed development site was zoned according to the archaeological potential of the site and the impact of the proposed development. A programme of 5% evaluation excavation within the Area of Archaeological Potential, and further evaluation excavation outside the Area of Archaeological Potential, subject to logistical arrangements, was recommended in the first instance. The results of this evaluation programme will inform any future mitigation strategy.
