Abstract: |
The two trenches located along the course of the sewer link provided evidence of considerable overburden above the natural drift geology. No in situ archaeological features appeared to exist but within Trench 2 a relative high propensity of Roman pottery and probable briquetage within a buried Roman soil suggests that this area had been a contact zone during Roman occupation albeit of uncertain function. The organic horizon probably indicates an encroachment from the south-west of probable residual marsh and bog that would have impacted upon the Roman landscape when the Roman fort of Maia was established. |
