Abstract:		 An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Oakford Archaeology between October 2011 and March 2012 during building work at Appledore Barton, Burlescombe. The site lies north of the village of Appledore. This has been identified in Domesday Book as the manor of 'Suraple', held in 1086 by Walter de Claville. The house is a remarkable 17th century survival of what appears to be a yeoman farmer's house, with many surviving fixtures and fittings. A watching brief was maintained during works associated with service trenches and a new access road. The initial ground reduction for the new road extended to a depth of 0.4m. As this did not extend below subsoil, it was agreed to monitor subsequent trenching. While the service runs were on average between 0.3-0.8m deep, the works associated with the new cess pit and run-off were on average 1.5m deep and cut through a thick layer of colluvium. Inspection of the trenches showed no evidence of archaeological activity. It contained a 0.3m thick cultivated topsoil, overlying a 0.3m thick mid to dark red brown loamy clay subsoil. Mid brown yellow loamy clay colluvium was exposed between 0.6-1.4m, while mid yellow clay natural was encountered at a depth of 1.4m below current ground level. No features, deposits or dating evidence were found to indicate archaeological activity within the development area.
