Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Oakford Archaeology in November 2012 at St Raphael's Church, Huccaby, Devon (SX 6630 7300). The site lies in an area of high archaeological potential less than 10m to the northeast of St Raphael's Church. The chapel was built in 1869 on the site of a ruined Dartmoor Longhouse as a mission chapel and schoolhouse. A watching brief was maintained during works associated with the extension of the car park. The ground reduction extended to a depth of 1.5m. Inspection of the exposed area showed no evidence of archaeological activity, exposing instead the natural hill-slope. It contained a 0.2m thick mid to dark brown silty loam topsoil (1000), overlying a 0.3m thick mid to mid yellow brown silty clay subsoil (1001). A mid yellow silty clay natural (1002) with very frequent granite inclusions was encountered at a depth of 0.5m below current ground level. No features, deposits or dating evidence were found to indicate archaeological activity within the area of the development.
