Abstract:
<summary>Desk-based assessment of the Kilkhampton area established that the settlement of Kilkhampton itself formed a fine example of a medieval landscape, with its complex of urban elements, including the castle, town and burgage plots, being particularly well-preserved. In the area around Kilkhampton evidence of earlier activity included two ploughed-down Bronze Age barrows, the defended Iron Age/Romano-British farmstead of Winswood Castle, the possible route of a Roman road, possible traces of Roman settlement, and field systems, boundaries and a possible early Christian cemetery of post-Roman date. Post-medieval and later settlement and industrial sites were also identified within the study area. {italon}AIP{italoff}
