Abstract:
A desk-based assessment and field evaluation was undertaken prior to the construction of three new dwellings on a vacant site on King's Arms Lane, Alston, as a condition of the planning consent. The site lies within the historic core of the town, just to the north of the church, which is believed to be medieval in origin. This area of Alston may have been relatively undeveloped up until the 18th century, possibly part of an area of open ground known as the Butts, where archery would have been practised. The evaluation revealed evidence for a narrow culvert and associated cobble surface, believed to relate to a former saw mill shown on a 1900 OS map. Trenches 2 and 3 contained structural remains believed to have been the remains of dwellings shown on the First Edition OS map of c.1865.
