Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken at the site of the former New Don Glass Works, which was in existence from 1891 to 1955. The works comprised four evaluation trenches, followed by a further contingency trench and a 'strip and record' area to mitigate against the effect of development around the vicinity of Trench 1. The results comprised substantial structural remains pertaining to flue structures in the northeast area of the site, associated with the glass works. Large sandstone foundations were found in the southern area of the site, possibly relating to an earlier phase of the works. A large quantity of biscuit-fired pottery wasters and kiln furniture was identified in one trench, possibly relating to a dump of material from the nearby Mexborough Old Pottery, which closed in 1844.
