Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during topsoil stripping and the excavation of dykes for a relief road. Earlier desk-based assessment had identified two areas of cropmarks which would be affected by the road. The first comprised two linear features, thought to have been of Romano-British date, whilst the second was thought to have represented medieval or post-medieval croftings. Geophysical survey, fielwalking and trial trenching had also been undertaken. During the watching brief, none of the previously identified features were observed, although a number of other linear features were found to have survived. A total of six ditches, which could be related to the recorded cropmarks, were revealed. Twenty nine sherds of ceramic material, representing a range of dates, were recovered. These included three Romano-British rim sherds and a number of probable Late Iron Age pieces. It was concluded that the features, together with the parallel linear cropmark features, had probably represented part of a Late Iron Age/Romano-British field system or enclosure complex. The precise nature of the system could not be determined, due to the limited exposure of features within the narrow development corridor. [AIP] |
