Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at a proposed area of reclamation at a colliery, which lay near the site of a Romano-British settlement. A post-medieval ditch and four pits which were probably Romano-British in date were recorded. Roman pottery and tile were recovered from the pits, and a small fragment of leather was also provisionally dated to this period. Six features which may have been thoroughfare ruts, and which pre-dated post-medieval ploughsoil, were observed. It was concluded that no further work would be required at the site, assuming that sub-surface disturbance in the area of the features could be avoided. [AIP]
