Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was maintained during the construction of an extension to a retail unit that fronted onto the northern extent of Skipton High Street. A previous desktop study had indicated that the area had a high potential to contain archaeological remains associated with Skipton's early medieval defences. The earliest activity recorded on the site dated to the late seventeenth century when the south western quadrant of the study area was occupied by a building and adjoining cobbled floor surface. The planform and situation of the structure suggested that it continued into an adjacent yard area to the south, indicating that the size and shape of the property parcels to the rear of the street frontage had altered over time.
