Abstract:
In October 2003 North Pennines Archaeology Ltd undertook an archaeological desk-based assessment and field evaluation of land at Mayburgh View, Eamont Bridge, Penrith, Cumbria. This was in response to a brief prepared by Cumbria County Council Archaeology Service following a planning application for a residential development to Eden District Council by the client, Design and Build Projects Ltd. The work involved the consultation of the County Sites and Monuments Record, Kendal and County Record Office, Carlisle in order to place the site within its archaeological, historical, geographical and topographical context. This was followed by the excavation of two linear trial trenches in order to assess the presence/absence, extent, nature and state of preservation of archaeological deposits. A post medieval ditch and plough marks were observed in trench 1. No archaeological deposits were observed in trench 2 and it was concluded that no other archaeological activity had taken place on the site.
