Abstract: |
Eight trial trenches were excavated on the site of the proposed cemetery site, which is located approximately 2km northwest of the centre of Lincoln. Previous work to the north of the site, carried out during construction of the nearby bypass, had located three burials in wooden coffins and the foundations of a substantial stone-built structure. Associated pottery indicated a Roman (3rd century) date. The current evaluation located further evidence of Romano-British settlement - mainly in the form of ditches and gullies, with associated pottery, tile and animal bone. The finds may be interpreted as belonging to a Roman farmstead, or possible a villa. |
