Abstract: |
The archaeological watching brief was in response to a planning application for a new range of dwellings to land behind (west) of 145 Long Street, Easingwold. The work revealed evidence for Medival agriculture with a cluster of medieval abraded pottery that dates to the Medieval Period (late 14th/15th century). These were located towards the south of the development area and were contained within the subsoil. In addition to the pottery a marked rise in the sandy natural across the site was interpreted as a linear field boundary. The presence of pottery in the site would appear to be associated with the manuring and use of midden stored manure which incorporated domestic rubbish including broken pottery, probably in a strip field context. The arable regime would appear to have been short lived as evidenced by the relatively large sherds. In conclusion, the evidence from the watching brief suggests that the arable agriculture was being practiced towards the end of the Medieval period. |
