Abstract:		 A programme of geophysical survey and trial trench evaluation was undertaken on a parcel of land south of Kettering Road, Stamford. The site lies around 200m east of Ermine Street, and in close proximity to previous finds of remains associated with the Benedictine nunnery of St Michael and a probable late Saxon/Saxo-Norman iron smelting site. Positive area anomalies indicative of possible iron working remains were located by the geophysical survey, together with a linear feature (undertaken by APS - OASIS ref. archaeol1-113593). The trial trench evaluation produced no evidence of iron working remains and the linear feature coincided with a stone-built field drain. The only features of note were a shallow ditch and a possible pit, located in a trench on the northern side of the field, adjacent to Kettering Road.
