Abstract: |
An evaluation by trial trenching prior to the planned construction of a resevoir. Five evaluation trenches were machine excavated within the proposed area and a later sixth trench was added to investigate an alternate location. A concentration of Roman flue and roof tiles were observed on the surface of the south-eastern part of the site, which proved to be site of a Roman building with a mortared flint foundation. An adjacent spread of Roman material suggested filling of a lower part of a hypercaust base. The spread if Roman tile and absence of archaeological features to the east of this building probably indicates the site of a possible timber building. Across the whole site were numerous ditches suggesting a long period of occupation. Only limited excavation was carried out ; however it is clear the that the ditches are primarily of Roman date and mostly represent settlement compounds rather than field ditches. Pottery discovered were mainly surface finds but did include some Middle Iron Age and Late Iron Age sherds. |
